Why isn't Andy Burnham fixing this?
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has set out Greater Manchester's vision for transport and active travel: integrating walking and cycling is a crucial part of that vision, and critical for switching some journeys from cars to bicycles to meet Carbon Neutral targets. However, Burnham does not have direct control over Manchester's roads - Manchester City Council make these decisions. Manchester City Council's plans for Great Ancoats are in direct conflict with Greater Manchester's transport vision and are incompatible with Carbon Neutral and Clean Air goals. |
What needs to happen to get this right?
The flawed plans have been referred to the Neighbourhoods and Environment Scrutiny Committee - this will take place this Wednesday 17th July.
Written submissions can be made to the Committee Members or to the Committee directly at scrutiny@manchester.gov.uk We need the Committee to understand how important this issue is, and how strongly people feel that these plans need to be revised in light of the viable alternative proposal showcased here, and the many flaws with the Council plans detailed on this site. We also need to make sure the Committee to understands how significant this issue is for the Council's and Manchester Labour's credibility to follow their words about air quality, their Climate Declaration, and transport, with deeds. |
The Neighbourhoods and Environment Scrutiny Committee: "looks at matters that affect local communities, including waste and recycling, housing, carbon emissions and climate change". They will scrutinise the Council's plans on Wednesday 17th July. "If there's an issue you want to contribute to, let us know. You can either send a written contribution to scrutiny@manchester.gov.uk or you can attend a meeting and ask the Chair if you can speak" |
Manchester City Council now have the opportunity to make Great Ancoats Street into a triumph that shows they can turn words into deeds.
Or they can choose business-as-usual and show their commitments are meaningless.
We will be watching closely.

At present the Council are still ploughing ahead with their flawed plan
We think the alternative Boulevard Concept shows we could do this so much better. We urge the Council to hit 'pause' on their scheme - and explore better options for Great Ancoats with constructive community engagement.
